Terrifying app used every day by millions of Americans is developing a mind of its own

Daily Mail - Science & tech

An AI tool used by millions of Americans has quietly breached a major security barrier designed to stop automated programs from behaving like humans. The latest version of ChatGPT, referred to as'Agent,' has drawn attention after reportedly passing a widely used'I am not a robot' verification, without triggering any alerts. The AI first clicked the human verification checkbox. Then, after passing the check, it selected a'Convert' button to complete the process. During the task, the AI stated: 'The link is inserted, so now I will click the'Verify you are human' checkbox to complete the verification.

OpenAI unleashes ChatGPT agent for truly autonomous AI tasks

FOX News

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sits down with Shannon Bream to discuss the positives and potential negatives of artificial intelligence and the importance of maintaining a lead in the A.I. industry over China. OpenAI just took a big leap forward with artificial intelligence. ChatGPT agent acts as more than just a chatbot; it serves as a real assistant that takes action on your behalf. If you've used tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or Google Gemini, you know they're great at answering questions and writing content. But ChatGPT agent goes beyond that.

OpenAI's ChatGPT Agent Is Haunting My Browser

WIRED

Most people's browser tabs are filled with unread news articles. Mine are filled with AI agents and ghost clicks. I have four instances of OpenAI's ChatGPT Agent--the generative AI tool released last week, which can run searches and perform tasks on the web--already open with each running in its own tab. I've given these first four agents relatively simple jobs based on ChatGPT's suggestions. One is clicking around to find a birthday gift on the Target website, and another is generating a pitch deck about robotic dogs.

OpenAI's New ChatGPT Agent Tries to Do It All

WIRED

Isa Fulford, the research lead for OpenAI's new ChatGPT agent, needed to order a bunch of cupcakes, so she asked the AI tool to do it for her. "I was very specific about what I wanted, and it was a lot of cupcakes," she says. "That one took almost an hour--but it was easier than me doing it myself, because I didn't want to do it." OpenAI has launched a new agent for ChatGPT that uses a virtual browser to complete tasks and can generate downloadable files, specifically PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets. While not a full replacement for the Microsoft suite of workplace tools, the features included in this agent from OpenAI could obviate some users' reliance on Microsoft's enterprise software.

Learning-by-teaching with ChatGPT: The effect of teachable ChatGPT agent on programming education

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This study investigates the potential of using ChatGPT as a teachable agent to support students' learning by teaching process, specifically in programming education. While learning by teaching is an effective pedagogical strategy for promoting active learning, traditional teachable agents have limitations, particularly in facilitating natural language dialogue. Our research explored whether ChatGPT, with its ability to engage learners in natural conversations, can support this process. The findings reveal that interacting with ChatGPT improves students' knowledge gains and programming abilities, particularly in writing readable and logically sound code. However, it had limited impact on developing learners' error-correction skills, likely because ChatGPT tends to generate correct code, reducing opportunities for students to practice debugging. Additionally, students' self-regulated learning (SRL) abilities improved, suggesting that teaching ChatGPT fosters learners' higher self-efficacy and better implementation of SRL strategies. This study discussed the role of natural dialogue in fostering socialized learning by teaching, and explored ChatGPT's specific contributions in supporting students' SRL through the learning by teaching process. Overall, the study highlights ChatGPT's potential as a teachable agent, offering insights for future research on ChatGPT-supported education.

Dialogue Shaping: Empowering Agents through NPC Interaction

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

One major challenge in reinforcement learning (RL) is the large amount of steps for the RL agent needs to converge in the training process and learn the optimal policy, especially in text-based game environments where the action space is extensive. However, non-player characters (NPCs) sometimes hold some key information about the game, which can potentially help to train RL agents faster. Thus, this paper explores how to interact and converse with NPC agents to get the key information using large language models (LLMs), as well as incorporate this information to speed up RL agent's training using knowledge graphs (KGs) and Story Shaping.

ChatGPT agents are better at simulated role-play than humans

New Scientist

ChatGPT-powered AIs given long-term memory capabilities and personal motivations could role-play characters in a simulated town more believably than human crowd workers. "This idea of creating believable agents that actually exhibit this behaviour – that give the illusion of realism – was something that we as an academic field wanted and have been talking about for the last four decades," says Joon Sung Park at Stanford University in California.
